7 Ways to Turn Your Backyard Into a Summer Oasis

One of the best things about summer in the Pacific Northwest is being able to enjoy time outside. The beautiful weather this time of year far makes up for the dreary Seattle winters, and it means we appreciate the sunshine more than anyone else! This summer, don’t limit yourself when it comes to home decorating- and take the comfort of our indoors outside with these seven outdoor decorating ideas.

Use Plants for Privacy

If you have a small backyard or feel like your yard is on display to your neighbors, plants can act as nature’s screen. Making a plant privacy wall will help create a more private backyard space for you to enjoy. Privacy hedges are a type of landscaping that will provide you with privacy year-round. You can also plant bamboo or position potted plants to create a green screen around the perimeter of your yard.

Build (or Buy) a Fire Pit

If DIY projects are appealing to you, you can build your own fire pit for about the same cost as a one-weekend getaway. Adding a fire pit will transform your backyard into a fun and cozy gathering place for friends and family. Just make sure you build it in an area of your yard that is located far from hanging trees (and make sure to check the area you live in for the local codes on open flames!). For those that prefer an easier approach, you can also buy a fire pit from your local home depot or home and garden store.

Hang a Porch Swing

If you have a deck, hanging a porch swing will change your entire summer! Porch swings are synonymous with relaxation, and you’ll never want to read a book, take an afternoon nap, or relax with a glass of wine after a long day anywhere else. Porch swings come in a large variety of styles and sizes, so pick the one most appealing to you!

Add Mood Lighting

Hanging lights outdoors can be done in a variety of ways to add ambiance. Try stringing lights around the perimeter of your yard, across your yard in a zigzag pattern, or weave a strand of lights through your deck railings. There are many different sizes, colors, and types of lights that are specifically made for outdoor decoration. You can also buy energy efficient solar powered lights which eliminate the fuss of extension cords and power outlets.

Install a Fountain for Soothing Sounds

Although a custom-installed fountain can add amazing appeal to your backyard, it is considered a major construction project and doesn’t come cheap. Luckily, there are many other options for those who crave the relaxing sound of running water on a hot summer day. You can make a fountain yourself out of just about anything, such as a stack of large rocks, or you can buy a fountain at the store and just plug it in outside with the help of an extension cord. Fountains can mask unwanted noise from traffic or neighbors, so they are the perfect option for many people who live near or in the city!

Add Decorative Cushions to Patio Furniture

You don’t have to buy a whole new patio set in order to create a fresh, on-trend backyard look. You’ll be surprised at how a few brightly colored throw pillows will make your patio look lively and chic. This summer, geometric patterns are trending, as well as anything coral colored. It’s easy to find an outdoor pillow that matches these criteria, and you won’t have to buy a whole new couch!

Add a Garden Bench

Similar to a daybed, a garden bench is a perfect spot for a moment of quiet relaxation. It can be placed almost anywhere around your yard and makes the perfect perch to watch your children or pets play outside.
